In the 70's, the lady who was the previous proud owner, ordered this saddle directly from Slim Fallis. For many years, she rode and won in this saddle, largely at the Congress, and pictures of her riding in this saddle were once displayed in many magazines. Her niece told me the saddle was a custom, Sterling Silver, show saddle, done with liberal buckstitching, as was the fashion of the time. The stirrups are not silver, they are polished aluminum, but the silver applique, so very detailed, is Silver.
Fallis balanced ride saddles were first introduced in 1951, after Merlin (Slim) Fallis studied, for many years the balance of both horse and rider in motion. He continually improved on his design, used the finest of materials, and the saddles are all hand carved. Although Slim passed away in 1982, his son John has continued the Fallis Balanced Ride saddle, and continually works to improve and perfect the design, well recognized and appreciated by knowledgeable Horseman the world over. The saddle has a 15 inch seat, and full, 7, quarter horse bars. The seat is the old waxed leather, and does show some expected variation in color. The carving is detailed and beautiful across the entire saddle. The stirrup leathers are wide and made from very pliable leather.
They show use, but seem to be very strong and do not exhibit any unusual wear. The horn and tree are tight.
The stirrups adjust by means of Blevins buckles, and are a work of art in themselves. The buckstitching is very nice, and the only blemish I could find on the saddle, was some tiny scratches near the base of the horn. I could not capture them with my camera. The saddle has the silver rope lacing. I do not know if it is sterling, I think not, but did not test. Barbara appears on the name plate on the rim of the cantle. If you are not familiar with Fallis saddles, you owe yourself the privilege of reading about them by Googling the name. This is a very expensive saddle that will ride like the person designed it to, with perfect balance for both horse and rider! Please check my other listings, as I said above, it has a matching breastplate. In order to post as many pictures of the saddle as I could, I elected to list and picture them separately.
